I guess you really can't judge a book by it's cover

A couple of days ago I did something that I haven't done in a while...buy a hip hop magazine, XXL to be exact. I don't know why I did, I guess I can blame it on boredom. I usually try to carry a book with me but I left the house without one and found myself in the 59th street train station with nothing to read & said to myself what the hell.
So I'm reading through it & came across an article about Young Jeezy. Now I like Jeezy's music, shit I still remember the day my boy Jamaal stopped by my crib with his 1st CD and I was... why did you buy a Young Jeezy album? His response was he was in Sound City ( a mom & pop record store on stienway st. in Queens) & wanted to buy something to support the store & wasn't really anything out at the time. So me being the kinda guy I am made a copy cuz I'm willing to give every artist at least 1 full listen. Long story short we were both very surprised at how much we were diggin the album.
Anyway back to the purpose of this entry, so I'm reading through it & with every page regretting the purchase, then I get to the Jeezy article and retracted that statement. That article alone made me content that I broke my streak of not buying magazines anymore (anyone who knew me growing up knows that my room was like a magazine stand).
As I'm reading it I keep saying to myself wow a rapper that actually gets it, a down south rapper no less. He's asked about his new album called "The Recession" & how did his approach to this album change from his last two albums & how the real recession affects him. Here's his answer(clif notes version):
"People are going through life changes right now. When I 1st came out money was plentiful, and people just loved to hear about money. 'Bout throwing it,'bout getting it, 'bout spending it, makin' it... That's what Thug Motivation(1st album) was about. And I gradually watched things change...When I went to The Insperation(2nd album), I started seeing shit, like, This ain't the same way it used to be...The Insperation, for me, was like, Okay, y'all see what's going on. You see what's about to come...There wasn't as much club music on there as I would have put on Thug Motivation, because, at the time, we were all clubbin'. Now the clubs have slowed down a lil', & I'm on the road workin', and when u get back home, you don't really see the same thing you used to. Because they getting ready for what's about to happen next, & thats a recession...You know when things start to slow down...Everybody dealing with it in different ways. Some people still continue to party like it's not going on, & some people sit at home. Some people are losing their houses or can't pay their mortgage. Some people are working to pay for gas. Some people could give a fuck what's going on with the economy...The recession affects me in a lot of ways. Even with just living. I don't wanna go to the club & be throwing money & doin' all that shit, & ain't nobody else in the club got it. It don't make no sense. They ain't gonna love you for that. They gonna hate you...I could go to the studio & give everything I got, but if you're not able to ride with me because you can't buy it, or you can't come to see me, then your not even feeling the same. So why am I gonna come out talkin 'bout safes and money to the ceiling when all the safes are halfway empty now?
Now it may not be a big deal, but it was good to see a more mainstream rapper have some sense & seem to take the current climate into consideration when it comes to the content he chooses to put out in his product. And some of you like me would not even think of Young Jeezy as one of those rappers.

Movie Pick: The Wackness

What's Going on World!?
Every now and again when I feel the need to I will make a recommendation or give a opinion/review on a movie, album, mixtape or even just a song that I feel more people should check out.
So I'm gonna start off with...

Now if you are like me and grew up in NYC in early-mid 90's and loved the Hip Hop music of that era you will probably digg this movie as much as I did. The story line isn't groundbreaking or anything, but it's pretty good and well told. The soundtrack is on point and you will find yourself and or the person next to you singing along. The acting was pretty decent with the exception of Method Man's attempt and execution of the worst Jamaican accent on film, and highlighted by Ben Kingsley as the pothead shrink of the main character played by Josh Peck of Nickelodeons Drake and Josh fame.
In closing this is definitely a movie worth checking out and I'll leave you with the trailer below.

Video Music Box 25th anniversary concert

Some of you may be too young to remember how serious Video Music Box was to my generation. I remember rushing home from school just so I can watch the show. It shaped my view and love of Hip Hop. So when I found out about a free 25th anniversary concert at Central Park's Summer Stage I was so hyped even though there was no mention of who was gonna perform.
So I get there and theres a pretty long line already. I waited for about a 1/2 an hour then they started letting people in, and as I enter I first notice the bleacher seats which were looking pretty good considering I came straight from work and finished a 7 day in a row work week. Then I look to the stage area and noticed space right in front and said fuck it I'll sit and relax when I get home. So after some more waiting they were finally ready to start the show.(Excuse the quality of the pics they were taken on my IPhone)

First up was Dj Jazzy Joyce to warm up the crowdThen came the Crash Crew, and then In Touch whom i didn't take pics of either sorry.

Then The Sugar Hill Gang, Grand Master Cass, and Melle Mel
The Retro Kids: group of young kids on their 88' shit. Flat tops, gumby's with the Kwame blonde streak and all gave a good performance, and that chick was wearing the hell outta that body suit oooowee

Special Ed: I got it made, I'm the Magnificent, Crooklyn Dodgers...
Dana Dane

Naught by Nature: who had the most stage time and utilized every minute of it. They put on a great show. O.P.P., Hip Hop Hooray, Feel Me Flow, Uptown Anthem etc.... Just awesome

O.C.

Chubb Rock: Treat Em Right...Nuff siad

Milk Dee: what more can I say Top Billin

Mr Cheeks (Lost Boys):
Renee, Jeeps Lex Coupes Beamers and the Benz, Music Makes Me High...etc

Nice & Smooth: Hip Hop Junkies, Sometimes I Rhyme Slow, Can't Have Ur Cake & Eat It Too, Dwyck etc... Even with technical difficulties they tore it down. Funny thing is the sound went out but the mics were still working so they were like forget the beat and they did the... I'm Greg Nice & I am MC Smooth B, together we are nice and smooth in perfect harmony, and just in case you were wondering what went wrong we'll say that we're sorry for keeping you waiting sooo looooong...aww man it was off the chain.
Other honorable mentions but no photos are Schooly D, Spoonie G, Dj Red Alert, Dj Kool Herc, Dj Hollywood, A.G., Dres (from Black Sheep and he didnt even perform WTF)

Needless to say this was one of the best concerts I have ever been to, and it was FREE!!!!lol. But it was an experience I would have gladly payed to see. To see the artist that inspired me to fall in love with the art/culture that is me is something I will never forget. But at the same time it made me sad because even though I knew it to be true already it proved that this era is long gone and that feeling that the music used to give me (with a few exceptions of course) is all but dead.

Be gentle...its my 1st time.

Wow, this feels like a long time coming but here it goes. This is just gonna be a creative outlet for me. There will be no personal blogs or at least it will be kept to a minimum. This will be more of a trip into the mind of Ricky Oh. Just my thoughts, likes, dislikes, random pics, videos, songs, reviews and opinions. So just sit back relax and enjoy the ride.
